On the Origin of Myocardial Edema Contrast in T2-STIR Images

چکیده
Introduction Acute myocardial infarcts (AMI) are typically discriminated with T2-weighted short TI inversion recovery (STIR) with turbo spin echo (TSE) readouts [1], albeit with limited specificity [2]. Guided by the association that T2-STIR images identify AMI territories on the basis of edema-related T2 changes, even some of the recently proposed improvements [2,3] have relied on preferential sensitization of magnetization to T2weighting. However, whether T2-STIR imaging itself may also be sensitive to other sources of image contrast have not been fully investigated. We hypothesize that in addition to T2-weighting, edema detection with T2-STIR imaging has substantial weighting from proton density (PD) changes.

CMR imaging of edema in myocardial infarction using cine balanced steady-state free precession.
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the capabilities of balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) cardiac magnetic resonance imaging as a novel cine imaging approach for characterizing myocardial edema in animals and patients after reperfused myocardial infarction. BACKGROUND Current cardiac magnetic resonance methods require 2 separate scans for assessment of myocardial e...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Different CMR Methods for Detecting Myocardial Edema Associated with Acute Myocardial Infarction
Introduction: A number of CMR imaging approaches have been proposed for detecting myocardial edema accompanying acute myocardial infarctions (AMI). T1 [1] and T2 [2] maps, T2-prepared SSFP [3] and cine SSFP (bSSFP) [4,5] are potential alternatives to the most commonly employed T2-weighted STIR (T2-STIR) [6] imaging. However, the relative sensitivities of the various approaches in relation to th...
متن کاملCMR-based assessment of myocardial edema in the setting of ischemia and reperfusion
Background Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) based assessments of area-at-risk and salvageable myocardium on the basis of myocardial edema in the setting of acute coronary syndrome is of significant clinical interest. However, their dependence on the choice of acquisition method and time to imaging has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the temporal evolution of myocardial e...
متن کاملDetection of myocardial edema with diffusion weighted imaging in patients with acute myocarditis
Methods We have analyzed 26 consecutive patients: 22 male, average age: 27 years (range 13-43) with clinical diagnosis of acute myocarditis. The CMR examinations were performed on a 1,5 T scanner using an eight-channel phasedarray coil combined with 4-6 elements of spinal coil. All patients underwent assessment of myocardial oedema: T2weighted triple inversion recovery (STIR), T1-weighted turbo...
متن کاملMulti-vendor, multicentre comparison of contrast-enhanced SSFP and T2-STIR CMR for determining myocardium at risk in ST-elevation myocardial infarction
AIMS Myocardial salvage, determined by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), is used as end point in cardioprotection trials. To calculate myocardial salvage, infarct size is related to myocardium at risk (MaR), which can be assessed by T2-short tau inversion recovery (T2-STIR) and contrast-enhanced steady-state free precession magnetic resonance imaging (CE-SSFP). We aimed to determine how...
